Dopamine is a neurotransmitter and hormone that drives motivation, reward anticipation, and goal-directed behavior. Not 'the pleasure molecule'. Closer to the wanting signal.

Mechanism: Released by VTA and substantia nigra neurons, projects to reward circuits (nucleus accumbens), prefrontal cortex, and movement centers. Tonic baseline + phasic spikes in response to anticipated reward.

Use case: Protect the baseline by avoiding compulsive supranormal stimulation (slot-machine apps, infinite scroll). Earn dopamine through effort (exercise, deep work, creation). That pathway protects itself.

Caveats: 'Dopamine fasting' is mostly marketing. Real dopamine modulation comes from changing what you actually do, not abstinence rituals.
