Matrixyl is a synthetic pentapeptide attached to a fatty palmitoyl group, which improves lipid solubility and skin penetration.
Mechanism: Signals dermal fibroblasts to upregulate collagen type I, type IV, and fibronectin synthesis. Mimicking a wound-healing signal in the absence of injury.
Use case: Anti-aging topical, often paired with retinoids or vitamin C. Clinical studies show measurable wrinkle reduction and improved skin density over 60–90 days. Effective concentrations are 3–5%.
Caveats: Slow effect. Give it 2–3 months before judging. Stable in most formulations. No photo-sensitivity, unlike retinoids.
